Stockholm is called a city built on islands, and that’s just what it is. You will be simply amazed by its beauty during your city break! We strongly advise you to explore the city by using the local boat transport, called Djurgårdsfärjan. You can also rent a car in Stockholm, but consider that streets there are narrow and it might be difficult to drive. The boat ferry is widely used not only by tourists, so you can experience how it feels to be a real local citizen. A single trip costs € 3,80 or you can buy an SL transport pass which works for all the other means of public transportation in Stockholm.
Djurgårdsfärjan can be used for more than just commuting, and allows you to book trips to several awesome exploration points around the city. One of the best attractions of Stockholm is Skansen, world’s first open-air museum. It consists of about 150 traditional houses, a Nordic Zoo with elks, reindeer and other species of native wildlife and an aquarium. To put it simply, it’s a complete village that illustrates the conditions in which people lived in Sweden during the past hundreds of years. Admission costs € 18,90 with a separate price for entering the aquarium of € 10,-.
After you’ve seen all the wonders of the Skansen, simply hop back on the boat and go to the Moderna Museet, which is one of the best art museums in Stockholm. It includes the works of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali, just to name a few famous artists. Check out their website to see the program and book tickets online!
All the boat-rides could get you seasick by now, so let’s take a walk. Just 5 minutes away from Moderna Museet you will find the Hjerta restaurant serving the best Swedish food in Stockholm and additionally offering you a wonderful view on the port right from the edge of the water. You just have to try their fresh Pollock fish!
Finally, there is one more place you cannot miss during your city break in Stockholm – it’s the Kungliga Slottet, the world’s largest royal castle. It is still being used for its original purpose. The place is not only impressive because of the look of it, but also because of its size – it consists of 608 separate rooms! There are plenty of things to marvel over inside, the Queen Kristina’s silver throne or the Karl XI Gallery being just a few of them. You can get there by metro, hopping out at Gamla Stan Station, or by a bus, exiting it on Slottsbacken – numbers 43, 46, 55 and 59 will get you there. Admission fee is only € 15,75.
